Students looked at Mola designs which originated with the Kuna tribe in Panama. The word mola means shirt or clothing and women from the Kuna tribe would weave these very colorful, stylized designs into cloth and later cotton. First students identified similarities in mola designs and other modern-day appliqué textiles focusing on line, shape, and color. The students drew out their practice sketches and then transferred their design using yarn.
Victor Vasarely's "Vega-Nor" is an excellent example of optical illusions in art and the purpose of the OP Art movement. Vasarely's use of color and line creates an illusion of a sphere on a flat surface.
