Second grade students looked at artists Giuseppe Arcimboldo and Romare Bearden as inspiration to create their abstract faces. When reading the story, Hello, Fruit Face! by Claudia Strand, students noticed that although they were abstract they could easily identify his subject matter as a portrait. Arcimboldo painted built his faces using fruits, vegetables, and things from nature but he focused on his proportions and the shapes he used to build his faces to maintain realistic qualities of a face. Students focused on basic proportions to create their portraits and also thought through which shapes and magazine images to use for each part of the their person's features.
