As a teacher, my dual degree in Art Education and Art History provides me with the ability to teach an integrated curriculum, incorporating the production of art as well as promoting an appreciation of how art has evolved over time. I seek to bring the knowledge I have gained from being a practicing educator, historian, and artist into the classroom.
I intend to offer art as an outlet of expression to my students to help them gain a personal sense of accomplishment, ownership, and confidence while creating their work. In one teaching experience, I guided a student through the realization that art does not have to be photorealistic to be considered successful. She wanted to draw a picture of her 10th birthday, but informed me that she “could not”. We discussed using shapes, line quality, and color choice to portray her vision and feeling that day. Upon completion of her abstract drawing, she shared with me her sense of accomplishment. I aim to steer students in a direction where they recognize the potential in all techniques and styles. I am dedicated to creating developmentally appropriate practices attuned to students’ experiences and abilities. I strive to introduce different mediums as well as various visions and techniques of both traditional and contemporary artists. I believe it is important to incorporate technology into the classroom, as it is an integral part of today’s society. By using different tools such as online presentations, photo and video editing, digital drawing, and online art galleries, students can use technology in conjunction with the visual arts. With every student interaction, my understanding and appreciation for art grows stronger. Through my studies, my passion for art continuously strengthens and I aim to share with my students, art’s history and impact on the world. |
